Furman University broke ground last week on The Woodlands which will be a 144 unit apartment style facility for seniors ages 62 and older. The Greenville Journal reports that 95 of the units have already been sold. The 22 acre development will include such things as an arts and crafts studio, a barbershop and beauty salon. In addition residents will have access to on site assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing.
Furman President David Shi says the impetus for the project is that there simply aren't enough places for retirees to live in the Greenville area. Residents will be able to take advantage of the Furman University Living in Retirement Program which provides continuing education for seniors. A spokesman for the university states that the facility will be one of the top three in the state for retired people because of what Furman has to offer including interaction with students.
