While it is true that Memorial Day is marked by time off of work. With picnics. With the Indianapolis 500. With local festivities. And while it is true that it marks the semi-official end of school and the start of summer, the true meaning of Memorial Day was officially started as a holiday after the Civil War as a time to commemorate and honor all of the Union and Confederate Soldiers who had died in battle.
During the 1900's it was extended to honor all Americans who have died in Military service. Over the years, many thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and women, coast guardsmen and women and marines have died in defense of our country.
We hope you have a great weekend and that you enjoy the festivities in the Greenville area. We also hope that you will take a few minutes to honor those who have given all that we might enjoy the freedoms that we do. We hope that your Memorial Day will be filled with warm thoughts and respect for these patriots, heroes, and all who have fallen in the cause of freedom.
We thank them for their service, for their selflessness and ultimately for their sacrifice on our behalf.
