This is the first of a two part post on what causes stress for people looking to buy a home. After years of working with families looking to buy a home, we get to see people at all stages of the process. Here are some tips on how to make the purchase of YOUR next home more enjoyable.
Hint 1: Limit the number of decision makers in the process. This may sound funny why this is the first thing on the list, but it is for a reason. One of the biggest causes of stress for a couple is when they involve too many friends and family in the search process. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone likes to interject their thoughts and ideas into the final decision. At the end of the day, the ONLY people who need to be truly happy with the home is the people who live there. Limiting the number of votes to the people who live there, and limiting the input outside of that will reduce stress.
Hint 2: Realize that ALL homes will have a flaw and will not be perfect. Make a list of the things that are MOST important to you. Those are the must haves. Then let the other stuff fall into place or be open to different ideas.
Hint 3: Get Pre-approved. Seriously. This is a must. It avoids looking at homes that you cannot buy. Do this BEFORE you find a home and your home buying process will go MUCH easier.
Hint 4: Think about enjoyment as well as appreciation. Yes, your home is an investment (and can be a GOOD one!), but its biggest role is as a place that you LIVE. If it fits your lifestyle and gives you comfort and peace of mind, that is important. Many times people get focused on the potential appreciation of value in a home, and they lose sight of the fact that it is important that they and their family will be living there for several years...at least!
Up for next week.. more hints to make the home buying process be more enjoyable!
